Normative and theological approaches are important approaches in Islamic Studies for understanding Islamic teachings, values, doctrines, and beliefs based on religious sources. This article aims to explain the concepts, characteristics, scope, methods, strengths, limitations, and relevance of normative and theological approaches in Islamic Studies. This study employs library research by examining relevant books, journal articles, and academic works. The findings show that the normative approach emphasizes the understanding of Islam based on the Qur’an, Hadith, and fundamental principles of Islamic teachings, while the theological approach focuses on issues of God, faith, revelation, prophethood, and the relationship between reason and revelation. Both approaches are related in understanding the religious dimensions of Islam, although they have different areas of focus. In contemporary Islamic Studies, normative and theological approaches remain important for understanding the doctrinal aspects of Islam, but their application needs to be developed dialogically with historical, philosophical, sociological, anthropological, and other interdisciplinary approaches.
