This community service activity was carried out by the PPM Lecturer Team of FST University of Jambi with the aim of providing understanding and practical skills to the community and managers of the Talang Gulo Jambi Final Processing Site (TPA) regarding the application of phytoremediation techniques on ex-open dumping land. Phytoremediation was chosen as an environmentally friendly approach to rehabilitate contaminated land, because it utilizes the ability of certain plants to absorb, stabilize, and decompose pollutants contained in the soil. The activity method was carried out through socialization involving the delivery of theoretical materials, interactive discussions, and field demonstrations regarding the selection of plant types, planting techniques, and maintenance that are appropriate to local conditions. Participants included landfill managers, relevant stakeholders, and students. The main outcomes of this activity demonstrated increased participant knowledge of the concept of phytoremediation and awareness of the importance of rehabilitating contaminated land. Furthermore, the community and landfill managers gained practical skills in identifying potential plant species, such as vetiver, bamboo, and other local plants that are adaptive to contaminated soil conditions. The benefits of this activity not only increased community capacity in environmental management but also provided alternative sustainable solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of the long-standing practice of open dumping. Through this outreach, it is hoped that the community and managers of the Talang Gulo Landfill will be able to independently implement phytoremediation techniques, thereby creating a healthier and more productive environment.
