Abstract

Film is a mass communication medium capable of representing social phenomena through complex audiovisual sign systems. Perayaan Mati Rasa (2025), directed by Umay Shahab, explores the theme of emotional detachment in parent-child relationships following parental death, a theme rarely examined in Indonesian cinema. This study aims to analyze the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings in scenes representing emotional detachment, and to identify how parent-child relationships are represented through verbal, nonverbal, cinematic, and auditory signs in the film. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis approach applied to ten purposively selected key scenes. Primary data were obtained through systematic observation of the film on the official streaming platform Netflix, supported by secondary data from official sources and academic literature. The findings reveal that the representation of emotional detachment is constructed through four synergistic sign categories: verbal signs in the form of sibling conflict dialogues as well as apologies and promises of honesty, nonverbal signs in the form of silence and flat expressions, cinematic signs in the form of the dominance of cold blue tones and sea symbolism, and auditory signs in the form of the original soundtrack forming an auditory narrative parallel to the visual narrative. At the myth level, the film deconstructs four cultural constructions: masculinity measured by the absence of expression, lies as a form of family protection, the sea as a space of eternal loss, and uniformity in family grieving. Parent-child relationships are predominantly represented through indirect communication, absence, and symbols, transforming from disconnection toward the restoration of emotional communication at the end of the narrative.
