Abstract

Sharia financial literacy has become an important issue in contemporary society due to the rapid development of Islamic financial institutions and the increasing complexity of digital financial systems. This study aims to examine the challenges and opportunities in developing sharia financial literacy among university students. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach through literature review and contextual analysis of students’ financial behavior, Islamic financial education, and digital economic trends. Data were collected from academic journals, government reports, Islamic financial publications, and relevant scholarly literature discussing financial literacy and Islamic finance. The findings indicate that students generally possess basic understanding of Islamic financial concepts, particularly regarding the prohibition of riba and Islamic banking systems, yet their broader knowledge concerning halal investment, sharia fintech, Islamic insurance, and ethical financial management remains limited. Modern consumer culture, social media influence, and digital lifestyles significantly affect students’ financial behavior, often encouraging impulsive spending and weak financial planning. In addition, limited educational integration and misconceptions regarding Islamic financial systems remain major obstacles to improving students’ literacy levels. However, technological advancement, digital financial platforms, and growing interest in halal lifestyles provide substantial opportunities for strengthening sharia financial education among younger generations. The study emphasizes that sharia financial literacy should integrate technical financial competence with ethical, spiritual, and social values derived from Islamic teachings. Collaboration between universities, government institutions, and Islamic financial organizations is necessary to develop innovative and contextual educational strategies capable of fostering responsible financial behavior and sustainable economic awareness among students.
